Now that I've converted from wap11 access point with
file/printer sharing to a WRT54G router in gateway mode I
wonder about using wep64 encription and Norton Internet
Security. I'm running wifi with xp/2k/98se plus HP2510
wireless printer. (Actually I've got Norton's firewall
turned off because I cannot make it work by programming
the Trusted Zone.) My question is:

Should I just turn off encription and leave Norton's
firewall off and depend on the WRT54G gateway to protect
me?

The Linksys gateway will provide firewall protection for at least
uninitiated inbound traffic which is the biggest threat. Your Norton
firewall will give additional protection in regards to restricting what is
acceptable outbound traffic from your computer even restricting which
applications can send traffic out to the internet. Having said that, the
Linksys may be all the protection you need as a firewall, BUT it is not a
substitute for encrypting your wireless traffic which would be vulnerable to
sniffing if you disable it and possibly someone else may even be able to
access your Wireless router assuming you are not using other means to
restrict access such as mac filtering. ---Steve

Thanks, Steve.

I'm considering MAC filtering. Since I know exactly which
computers I want to use my router and this doesn't change,
maybe I should just enable mac filtering. Do you have any
experience with mac filtering? Would I need to use static
IP addressing?

Also, what about disabling SSID Broadcast. Is that a way
to avoid the need for encription? Do I need static IP for
that.

Finally, is any of this worth fooling with? I have a
sense that encription (wep64) is slowing me down. Do you
think it is worthwhile to try to change it?

Mac addresses do not change [normally]. Therefore you can add the mac address to
the list of accepted ones and not have to worry about the ip address at all.
Turning off SSID broadcasting may help in hiding the network but anything that
is transmitted on your wireless network would still susceptible to eavesdropping
[including mac addresses] unless it is already encrypted such as in a ssl
website connection. If that does not bother you, then go ahead and disable it.
It should not slow down your network that much. --- Steve
