Are there any reliable settings for Ghost imaging that
will create an exact image of the drives beginning
sectors as well as the data on the drive. I am thinking
of using a 3rd party (Bootitng) imaging program that
sometimes screws up and is very complex to figure out
it's screwups and I need a Ghost backup that will image
all the beginning sectors that this program changes.
Has anyone here used Ghost to do this and what are your
experiences?

Why not use a Linux life-CD (e.g. Knoppix) and
dd or dd_rescue?

Acronis True Image works much better, and doesnt molest
your system at all if you do the image from what they call
the booted rescue CD.

Can that be used without installing ATI? Have read ATI
modified the registry settings alot and interferes with Win7
system backup; hard to uninstall too? What version do you
recommend? Thanks.

Yes, I do it all the time with systems I am recovering.

It isnt critical. Usually best to use one of the later versions
if you want to have the backup and restore desitination on
a machine on the lan or an external USB drive.

The many unhappy reviews on ATIH at amazon suggest
that if you load it into Windows, then you'd better know
what you're doingloading when you use it in Windows.

I use ATIH strictly by booting it from the CD disc that
you can buy in a box from many sellers. I prefer "clone"
and "manual" and "as is" going from an internal HDD
to a temporary plugged in HDD (on wood blocks) at
the side of the case.

BTW, as far as I know Acronis updates the box/disc
software as the year progresses, so make sure that
you get a *recent* box/disc.

BTW#2, in my experience ATIH 2010 often changed
the beginning sector location of the 1st partition
(not 4k aligned), whereas ATIH 2011 doesn't (and I've
checked this using the Linux Gparted boot CD
that costs $2)
