Can anyone tell me what this means? When I do a restart
the system beeps 1 long and 3 short and then hangs up.

If you have an Award BIOS.....

BEEP CODE MEANING POSSIBLE CAUSE
1 Long, 3 Short Video adapter failure Bad video adapter or memory

Yes I do have display....it mainly happens on reboots.

The video does work okay so I'm not sure...it may be memory.

The Bois is ASUS according to the HP system. Does that use the same codes or different?

Dennis,

All BIOSs have different codes. Award BIOS was the only one I found with 1
Long, 3 Short beeps.

If the video seems OK, that leaves the memory.

Memtest86 - A Stand-alone Memory Diagnostic
http://www.memtest86.com

It comes in a .zip file and so needs to be
1) unzipped
2) double-clicked to make a bootable floppy
3) boot with the floppy and the test will run immediately without user
input.
