Since I don't think there's a Vista Discussion Forum I'm hoping that posting
here can help solve my problem.

I just installed Vista Ultimate onto an ASUS P5K-Deluxe motherboard-based
system. Now the strange thing that's presenting the problem:

Every 7-20 seconds (no regular period - it ranges) my system's speakers
output 2 approximately 100-150Hz tones that sound like the Lub-dub sound of a
heartbeat heard thru a stethoscope.

I can't figure out what system process is causing these sounds.
Furthermore, when I'm playing an MP3 file, the lub-dub causes a drop-out
sound glitch in the music.

Any diagnostic, troubleshooting suggestions and recommendations are greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,

two thoughts that are probably off the mark but I'll suggest them
anyhow:

1) I always suspect rhythmic beeps or blips to indicate an overheating
problem. If the CPU fan failed or was blocked by a stray cable the
CPU would overheat, setting off an alarm that might feed through your
sound card. There would be nothing about it in Windows because
Windows would not see it, as it would be coming straight from the
bios.

2) my mother in law once complained about the sound of 'galloping
horses' coming over her hi-fi speakers - a rhythmic beeping pulse that
faded in and faded out. Turned out she'd left her mobile phone (US:
cellphone) beside the hifi unit and every time the phone touched base
with the network it sent out a signal that her hifi picked up...

As you are using the web interface you obviously didn't look very hard, did
you? Go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...s/default.aspx , expand
English, expand windows and hey Presto! There's a Vista section....

Yes there are Vista specific groups. Click below and ask your question there
as you will have access to many more people running Vista who are
knowledgeable about hardware issues

news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft....rdware_devices

As a general rule if I encounter problems with hardware I usually check to
see if there are updated drivers. Have you tried reinstalling the drivers
for your sound card?

Something like that scared the bejeezus out of my wife the first time it
happened to her. She'd unknowingly put her mobile next to her system
speakers, which are attached to the system by cables. An incoming call was
pre-announced by a throbbing pulse that so unnerved her she shut down the
system and wouldn't turn it on again.

The next day (she works at night) I "desensitized" her on this issue. ;-)
