BCM Performance Question

I know it's an old story, but is there any way of speeding up BCM?
I have this setup:

- A group of 8 users, each with high-spec workstations
- BCM database is running on a server, using full-blown SQL Server, not
MSDE.
- about 8000 contacts / accounts (4500 contacts, 3500 accounts)

The problems I get are:
- Linking an email to a contact. This makes the Workstation CPU run at
100% for 30 secs to a minute. The other issues are not linked to CPU
usage
- Searching for accounts can sometimes take a lot of time
- Editing or viewing an entry in an account record can be painfully
slow
- You can be viewing an account record and the BCM window will
disappear and you will have to click on BCM again to get it back

I've not tried adjusting Virus scanners, but then as the data is kept
in the database and not in local files I can't see how an Anti-Virus
system could cause issues.

I'm about to try running a SQL profiler trace, which I'll then run the
Index Tuning Wizard on.

Does anybody out there have any other ideas on how to speed this up?
Failing that, does anybody out there have any other ideas on how to
migrate to a decent product?

thanks,

Russ
