Ryan Giggs has been a great footballer over the years but not a world champion like Jenson Button, David Haye, Jessica Ennis or Beth Tweddle.

But, there you go, it's the public that do the voting.

I didn't see the show, but I can kind of understand why Giggs would have won it (certainly from a public vote anyway). He's been at one of the best clubs in the world, playing at the highest level for almost 20 years now. He's got as close as possible as it is for a footballer to be a world champion - 11 league titles, 4 FA cups, and 2 champions league titles.

At 36 he is still at the top of his game, having one of his best seasons yet. He's definitely one of the few good guys in football, so I'm glad he's done well.

Lots of people nominated for BBC Sports Personality would deserve to win it, but as football probably has the widest audience of the sports, so he had a big headstart.

I didn't think I'd be supporting a Man Utd player as a Newcastle fan
