Are you talking about a backup battery, i.e. a UPS with a battery.
I got an APC UPS backup system that comes with a special USB cable, or a
special serial cable with the earlier models, and I got to install software
that comes with it, between the UPS anf the PC, so it'll work properly.
The software, and cables all have to be installed properly. On my newer
machine with Powerchute, and cabling hooked up properly, I got the monitor
showing up in the task bar, plus the power options tabs were modified.
With this, the software will shut down the machine with a prolonged outage.
On another older machine, XP machine, with the special serial cable, it does
not work. I test it from time to time turning the power off to the UPS, it
beeps, and the PC keeps going. But I might have aproblem with a prolonged
outage if I'm nt home.
