Sony VGN-Fs550 Laptop, Windows XP

Why does the "power meter" tab in the Control Panel say the battery is
"Not Present"?

I removed the battery and put it back a couple of times to make sure
the connection is as good as it should be.

Computer is only two years old, it's been treated excellently and is
in near mint condition, and the battery is indeed present. It's the
original factory battery that never gave me more than about 30 minutes
of power, so I've almost never used the battery. Everything was fine
until today. Now, the "power meter" says the battery is "Not
Present."

Thanks,

Either the battery or the DC inverter is bad.

Thanks. Is there a way for me to determine if the DC inverter is bad
without taking the computer into a repair shop?

Since there are two options, I'd suggest taking the other option out of the
picture - put in a known-good battery.

If you don't have one, you likely have no choice but to go to a service
shop. However, if *they* have a known-good battery, it'll be quick to
tell.
