Basic pointer record question

I created a ptr record with my DNS service provider and it looks like this:

66.xx.xxx.xxx (the IP address that points to whateverDomain.com).

If I do an nslookup 66.xx.xxx.xxx, I get a reply "non-existent domain".

Am I completely off track here or do I have to wait a few days for the
pointer record to become available?

Please advise,

Thank you.
