On a system with one physical disk drive, are there any advantages to be
gained by converting from a basic to a Dynamic disk?

Thanks

First off...
you cannot convert your single drive to dynamic...even if you wanted to...
and NO...there is NO advantage to converting...but there are quite a few
dis-advantages!

Interesting - if I go through the process it doesn't tell me I can't do
so....

A dynamic disk is essentially a software RAID array.

Unless you create a hardware RAID prior to the installation of your OS...
there is no way (I know of) to have the first OS exist on a primary array.

Do not OK any changes...but go into disk management and look at the options
you get...that should hopefully clarify
your inquiry

It will let you do it; however, you will no longer be able to boot
from the disk, because the active primary partition is converted to a
simple volume.

Yes, you WILL be able to boot from it. It will preserve the partition in
the MBR, so no problem. This is also why there are some restrictions on
what you can do with an converted system partition afterwards

Well, I am sorry but I must have given you incorrect info...
but oddly enough...on my own machines...for whatever reason...I have no
option to convert the primary partition to dynamic.

At amy rate...I would not fool around with dynamic disks...
In the event of a problem...they would only complicate data recovery

Dynamic disk provide many features.
You can get the detail information from here.
http://www.dynamic-disk.com/what-is-dynamic-disk.html

Considering the advantages of the dynamic disk, maybe you will convert basic disk to basic disk. This operation can be realized by the built-in disk management.
http://www.dynamic-disk.com/basic-di...amic-disk.html

But you should know the risk of this operation, convert basic to dynamic is simple. But when you want to convert dynamic disk back to basic disk, the big problem appears--delete all the dynamic volumes to convert it back through the built-in disk management. So, I think this information can help you.

Probably no one is interested, but here is the original thread. It's only two years old.
