This should be an easy one:

I'm on a Dell laptop with XP. No monitor is plugged into the VGA port
on the back. My laptop's LCD is working fine.

In Display Properties->Settings, there seem to be 2 displays that I can
change settings for:
1. Plug and Play monitor on Mobile Intel(r) 915GM/GMS 910GML Express
Chipset
2. (default monitor) on Mobile Intel(r) 915GM/GMS 910GML Express
Chipset

What's going on here? Why does it show 2 displays if my eyes only see
1? Careful - your answers here will probably lead to many more
questions, possibly involving EDID files.

Eventhough there is no display plugged in your VGA output the adapter shows
the settings available for that output. Perfectly normal.

Most PC, including laptops, can now usually handle two (or more) monitors.
Since the laptop has a external VGA port, XP will set up a monitor setting for
this one.
