I am looking to build a notebook. Anyone know of a manufacturer who would
put out some good barebone notebooks?

You can buy and build a desktop because the parts are mostly
standard, off the shelf items. But laptops use custom mobo,
power supplies, graphics and other parts designed for each
particular laptop. I doubt you can build a laptop or even
update one that you buy used.

You can buy a new Dell laptop very inexpensively these days
(and other makers) so why try to reinvent the wheel?

I purchased an Averatec. Extremely pleased. Can't add memory or a hard
drive, however, so choose capability carefully if y'all go this route
hth.

Actually, I just found out a friend just referred me to a site recommend by
CPU mag called www.rjtech.com that sells a barebone ASUSZ71V chassis, which
is comparable to a Dell or Compaq. Once I get the chassis, everything else,
regarding components will fall into place.

Because I've already built a desktop, I want to take the challenge of
building my own notebook.

Gigabyte also makes some decent barebones notebooks.

I'll take a look, but before you begin buying parts, be sure
to check the price of the total machine, finish and ready to
work with an OS installed. Purchased in bulk, computer
hardware is cheap, when you order one each (part) they cost
an arm and a leg.

But if you have the time and money, are willing to forego
such things as guarantees and customer support, sounds like
fun. But can you get the parts YOU really want, such as USB
2.0 and Firewire 800, DVD DL RW drives, etc., etc.

Thanks for the link, but when I looked at it the "build it
yourself" link was not working and the prices and details
said Whitebook 15 inch and the prices were as high as
everybody else for a well setup machine.

Seems like parts one would buy individually.
