I wish to change the style of my balloons (comments) to a different shape
(more like the cartoon style) and have them be inline. I understand this is
possible...can I?

No, you cannot modify the comment balloons themselves. What you can do is
insert *shapes* in your document (if you are using Word 2007, it's on the
Insert tab of the ribbon).

Of course, you can change the font of the text, if that's what you are
asking. Modify the Comment Text and Balloon Text styles to suit your needs.
