I would be grateful for advice re likely cause of and solution for a problem
with IE6 on WinXP Pro (incl all recommended updates). Problem occurs on all
web pages and shows as large, overlapping text and often missing graphics.
Problem is not caused by or affected by changes in Text Size.

Problem is best shown with screen dumps but I am not aware as to how to post
these so I will try to describe one example.

Text font seems accurate (e.g. Ariel) although colour is not always correct
(e.g black is displayed in some cases instead of red), and size is always
larger. Some text should be displayed as black inside tabs; the text
appears as blue and the tabs do not appear at all. Some horizontal lines do
not appear. Text that should be blue is blue.

Have you installed Sun Lava? Get the latest version here:
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Be sure that Sun Java is selected in Internet Options > Tools

Ted - Thanks for prompt response.

I haven't got the problem computer in front of me now and will check re Java
when I next see it. However, I would be very surprised if it wasn't
installed. This is a problem that started several months ago, and after
several months of correct display.

Just to double check, I believe that the setting you refer to is found in IE
at Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and is a box under the heading Java
(San) labelled "Use JRE 1.5.xxx for<applet> (requires restart)". Is this
correct?

I didn't mention that pages display correctly on the problem computer when
using Opera. Am I correct to think that if the proplem with IE was lack of
Java, it would also be a problem with Opera?

The location you pointed to in the Advanced tab is correct.

I haven't used Opera for a long time so I can't offer a correct answer.
IIRC, Opera included an installer for Java.
