Is there a way to disable or prevent exchange server from
checking the e-mail format? I have an e-mail address
that I send to:

xxx.@xxx.com (yes that mailbox really has a dot before
the @ sign)

but exchange gives me the following message... any way
around this?

The format of the e-mail address is incorrect. Check the
address, look up the recipient in the Address Book, or
