I'm unable to listen to any sound on my Dell Dimension 2400 with on-board
sound. Any time I open a sound file of any kind or program that may use
sound i'm given an error message "Bad DirectSound Driver. Please install
proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code:
80070057"

Have you reinstalled the drivers? Get them from Dell's tech support site
for your specific Dimension.
