Bad advice - now have Service Pack 1

I was advised by a friend that if I uninstall XP Service Pack 2 then
reinstall it, that could solve the problems I am having with validation. I
told him that I cannot acces Microsoft Update, Windows Update (still, despite
all the advice I have been given)and my PC did not come with a disk but he
said that didn't matter.

Now I am stuck with Internet explorer 6, service pack 1 and am unable to
download SP2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can find links to download and manually install most of the updates and
patches here including IE7 http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html
Scroll down to the Windows XP section.

Thanks for the links Harry, but XP has went into deceptive mode. I did
download Service Pack 2 eventually but it said it couldn't complete the
installation. No explenation given so I have no indication of why it failed.
Memory space is not a problem either. Without SP2, there isn't a lot I can do.

Forgot to mention that I have Home Edition.

Thanks - but I've been advised about that and many other things I can do to
the registry before to no avail. I've ordered an SP2 disk from microsoft so
hopefully once that arrives I'll be back on track.

A friend of mine gave me his Service Pack 2 disk to try after I told him
about the problems I was having but that hasn't worked.

All I got was 'Access Is Denied' and then it uninstalled again. I'm fast
running out of ideas!!

As Ron mentioned, you should be posting to
microsoft.public.windowsupdate.

Until then, did you try the solution from:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873148
"You receive an 'Access is denied' error message when you try to install
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1"

This post is actually in microsoft.public.windowsupdate. I had a look at that
solution provided but I didn't quite follow it I'm afraid. On step two, where
exactly do I find ' Hexadecimal' as it certainly wasn't there when I clicked
on setup. Unless I'm doing something wrong but given the instructions, my
understanding is that it's there as an option.

I'm not sure which instructions you are referring to. Can you post a
link?

And you didn't say if you tried this page:
