A program to enable some program you've installed from Kodak (recently got a
digital camera by any chance?) to download updates.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

BackWeb is spying on you and your system. Go into Add and Remove programs
and remove it.

I do have a camera but I have had it for a couple of years. Installed on my
computer a year ago.

No, it isn't doing any such thing.

Backweb is a content download system. It's used by various programs
(including at least one reputable anti virus program) to download updates.

Some of those programs that make use of Backweb may be questionable, but the
problem is with these questionable programs, not with Backweb itself.

If you buy a hammer from a hardware store, it isn't the fault of the
salesman if you tell him you plan to use it to repair your house and then
instead choose to beat people with it on the way home.

Rather than talk about removing backweb, you should instead suggest that
people look for the program which installed backweb and make a reasoned
choice about THAT program - because that is where the action is.

Hi Chris,

The Kodak component involved is the Kodak Software Updater, which makes
use of BackWeb technology to deliver updates to your computer.

The software Updater does not colelct any information from your
computer and is solely used to inform you of available updates to the
Easyshare software.

It is likely that there is an option within AOL to allow this channel
to be active and if so I would recommend doing this, however you can
also disable the Kodak Software Updater.

- To turn Kodak Update on or off:
Start/Programs/Kodak/Kodak software updater/Kodak software updater
setup

- To uninstall the Kodak software updater:

1. Depending on your operating system, select Start > Settings >
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs or Start > Control Panel > Add or
Remove Programs.
2. In the Add/Remove Programs window, select Kodak EasyShare software,
then select Add (in Windows 98 or ME operating system) or Change ( in
Windows 2000 or XP operating system).
3. Click Next until a window opens with choices for Modify, Repair, or
Remove.
4. Select Modify and click Next.
5. For the Kodak software updater feature, in the Action list box,
select Remove then click Next.
6. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

To learn more about the BackWeb technology go to
