Backwards compatibility of macros between Excel 2003 and 2007

I have a data collection spreadsheet produced in Excel 2003 with macros, copies of which are issued to a number of users. The users update them and return them.
A couple of them have been returned with all macros apparently completely stripped out (the macros are password protected so the users couldn't do this in normal use). It looks as if the users concerned have Office 2007 and that Office 2007 is making changes to the macros which make them unuseable in Office 2003.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and is there any solution other than compelling them to downgrade to Office 2003?
Thanks
