When I try and put a VHS movie on my hard drive with Capture from a video
device, it's all static. I'm guessing this is from some kind of copyright
protection. Does anybody know where this copyright protection is coming from?
The TV tuner card I am using, or Windows Movie Maker? Also, is there any way
to get around it?

when you are capturing the VHS, do you see video in the capture window?
what are you using to capture ?
Given that VHS tapes are an analog signal, your problem almost certainly
isn't copyprotection. check your cable connections and settings on whatever
type of capture device your using.

I've experienced what you've described in trying to capture VHS tapes--even
"home made" tapes. A solution that I read somewhere was to run the signal
from the VHS machine thru a TIVO device before inputting to the capture
card. I tried it, and it works.

There MUST be a better way to solve this, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

If your main goal is to make DVD copies
of your VHS home movies...you don't need
a computer. A DVD Recorder like the

If these are commercial release VHS tapes and you want to capture
your old Arnie and Star Wars tapes etc, then they will be copy protected
with "macrovision" (google it to learn all about it).
Regardless if copying to PC's HD or a standalone DVD recorder, you
need a macrovision stripper device between your VHS machine and
the inputs of recording device - PC or DV recorder.
These are cheap and readily available.
