Hi,
the above is popping up when I try to run a program to burn data to my DVD.
Is this normal, and if not, how best to fix it? It is apparently a registry
key.
Thanks!
Sue

What is popping up? What is the exact text? In what form? When does it
appear? What program are you talking about. Why do you thing "it" is a
registry key?

Well, what DVD burning software did you install? Any? Windows XP can
read and play DVDs but it can't record them. The embedded burning
functionality only supports recordable CDs.

Open "My Computer", right-click on the DVD drive icon, click Properties.
If there is no Recording tab then WinXP doesn't recognize the burner's
recording capabilities. Did some drivers come with the DVD drive?

Dear Rock,
I use Ad Watch and it reported an attempt to modify the registry. This is
the complete text:
Registry modification detected
Root:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key:Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value:BackupNoCDBurning
Data:0
New Data:

I am presently unable to write to my DVD drive so wonder if this key is the
problem. Can you confirm that and if so, how might I fix it?
Thanks!
Sue

Ok Sue, that's a lot more info. Sorry I'm not familiar with that message
from Ad-Aware. Maybe if you give some history of the problem with the DVD
drive and what burning software you're using that might give some clues or
direction.

Hi Rock,
The key is the registry message rather than Ad Watch software as it is
informing me that something has made that entry in my registry. I have been
using NovaBackup software for years and suddenly I am getting "disc write
failed". I have tried several new dvd's with the same result. So, I don't
know if that regitry entry is blocking it or I have a very big batch of bad
dvd's. I also have Roxio Media Creator 9 installed and got an error trying
to burn files to DVD using it.
Thanks very much for your help,
Sue

Hi Vanguard,
Actually my primary use of the DVD drive is to do backups and for that I use
NovaBackup. I have suddenly been getting a disc write failed error and
noticed the entry in my registry as aforementioned. I have also tried
burning files to the DVD after the error using Roxio Media Creator 9 and it
too failed. So I'm not sure if I have a bad batch of dvd's or the registry
entry is the problem.
Thanks very much for your help!

Have you checked in the registry to see if that key is there?

Clean the lens inside the DVD burner. Or maybe the drive went belly up.
If you put in a commercially manufactured CD or DVD, can you
successfully copy its contents to a temp path on your hard drive?

"reported an ATTEMPT to modify the registry"

Well, that means the attempt was thwarted; otherwise, the message would
be something like "reported a modification to the registry". So you are
trying to use software that modifies the registry for it to work but you
let Ad-Watch prevent the change. Seems obvious why the software won't
work.

If you are not going to allow the software to make registry changes, you
can't use it. Contact the software maker on why they need this value in
the registry.
