backup utility problem w/ XP pro

I have been using the backup utility for several years. Now suddenly one
selection that I've been using has dropped several files, so it only backs
up
some files in the selection that worked correctly 2 days ago. When I try to
create a new selection, or edit an existing selection, I can run it once but
cannot save it to re-run subsequently.

What does the backup log tell you?

The report seems to be correct. It shows the correct times and number of
files that were backed up. Same info that's displayed during the backup. No
indication of a problem.

The problem is that I am unable to save the updated selection of files that
I want to back up. I can edit the selection and run it once successfully,
but can't save it to run again. Have to go in again and re-enter the
selected files. This problem started after I installed Service Pack 3.

I recently dealt with a slightly different problem that was also caused by
the SP3 version of ntbackup.exe. It turned out to be a bug. After the OP
reverted to the SP2 version of ntbackup.exe, everything worked as expected.
I suggest you try the same approach.

Can I use add/remove to remove SP3?

Why remove SP3? Leave it in place and replace ntbackup only. Since
ntbackup.exe comes under the umbrella of the "System File Protection"
scheme, the simplest way would be to put the SP2 version into your own
folder (e.g. into c:\Tools) and invoke it specifically there. If you try to
overwrite it direction then it will be overwritten by the SP3 version within
a few seconds. You could get around the system file proection but it's a
little tedious.
