I find info for the Backup Utility for XP Home and Pro, but nothing for the
Media Center Edition. Am I limited to drag and drop, or buying software such
as Aconis True Viewer 10?

MCE is just XP Pro, and I don't think XP Home includes
backup. But, I don't have XP Home.

In every experience I've had with external drive purchases
there is some kind of backup SW included.

Even if you don't acquire specific software, you can still
run the backup from a .bat script that you build. You
just won't have all the W&B(incremental, etc.).

WIN XP Home uses the Windows NT Backup utility. Might work of Media Center
Edition. Download here (if you want to give a try)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

XP Home does have ntbackup. It is not installed by default. It works
well (it's fast) for backing up data, source files, pictures, songs,
etc but don't expect it to restore your entire O/S--you need ghost or
True Image for that.

Plus its media-related features, and minus its ability to join a domain.

Yes, it does. However it's not installed by default.

Personally, I think it's worth buying a third-party product like Acronis
True Image, rather than using the built-in XP backup software.

The link you gave is for a version of ntbackup that will run on Vista. It's
a Beta version and not intended for XP. See the Supported Operating Systems
section.

Ntbackup for XP can be obtained from here:

Sorry about the wrong link. When I read the description I missed the part
about Vista.

It's nice though that something like this is coming out, if it works.
