Hello

I would like to know if there is a tool for archiving data on workstations
directly to the server; the idea is: on every user workstation (Win XP) I
would like to automaticly archive distinct (selected) folders (for example
My documents, Personal folders, etc.) directly to the server (Win 2003). All
data are phisycally located on workstations at the user side (no roaming
profiles).
One option is that at the beginning all selected folders are archived and
later on only the changes are being archived. Is this possible and how? Does
this option exist in Win 2003 or must the seperate tool be installed?

Have you considered locating your data on the server rather
than on the workstations? You can easily do this even if you
do not employ roaming profiles.

Give each person involved, space on the server in their name. For instance:

Rick\My Documents
Joan\My Documents
Harry\My Documents

Then move their My Documents to the server using the "move" function from
the individual's "My Documents/Properties" option.

The individuals will then be working off of the server and all addition and
changes will be on the server.

This makes backing up these files much easier also.

Hi,

You can use folder redirection to the server and backup up the files there.
This should be fine at least in LAN environment. Over slow links I don't
recommend this style.

Thank you all for help.
If there is no other trick, I suppose that moving folders to server location
would be the best idea.
But is it possible to do so, that users will have their documents located on
the server and also a 'shadow - temp' copy of the same files on their local
disk, because some users have laptops and they need to access this files
also outside our LAN.
I think that there is a way to configure 'offline copy' of files, but don't
know how to do this.

I once did this for a small company I worked for!

I installed Datakeeper 5.0 (from PowerQuest) on each work station. This
little utility program can be set to monitor specific folders and copy the
files anywhere, specifically to a server (as I had it set up to do).

The specific folders are monitored in "real time". Whenever a file in the
monitored folder is changed, it is immediately copied over the LAN to the
server. I could choose to keep any number of iterations of files on the
server. I chose 3. If a file was ever deleted from a work station I was able
to choose any of the 3 files to restore to the work station.

There may be other programs like this around as PowerQuest is now owned by
Symantec and they have no mention of this utility on their web site.

BTW: I believe the program came with the Drive Image 5.01 update from the
PowerQuest web site.

Veritas' Backup Exec has an add-in for just this purpose. Desktop-Laptop
Option (DLO) installs as a service on your clients. You then setup profiles
and a shared folder on the server. Each client then backups the selected
folders (either on a schedule or real-time) to the servers share. Its an
expensive option if you don't use BE already, but a cheap add-in if you do.
