I have been using Retrospect Express for my backup needs. I recently
changed my configuration so I figured I needed to rebuild the diaster
recovery CD. I was running version 6 and XP SP2 the last time I built a
recovery CD. I am now running XP SP3 and Retrospect has been upgraded to
version 7.6.

I have spent the last week trying to create a new recovery cd without
success. I receive a "iso to large to be created on a CD" error and errors
-1132 unable to write to its folder.

Unfortunately, EMC's customer support has become non-existent. I guess the
move from Dantz to EMC a while back changed things for them. I noticed 7.6
is no longer listed as available on Amazon which makes me wonder if they
are having financial problems.

In any event, I figure I better find something else. I have looked at
Norton Ghost 14 and Genie GBM Pro v8 as alternatives. Both of these should
work with XP and appear to have useful features?

I am just wanting to backup a home desktop XP system to a local drive as
well as backup mapped drives on my home networked laptop. I am most
concerned about the ability to recover from a diaster on the XP system and
not as much on the laptop.

I have looked at the XP version, but it does not appear robust enough. Any
advice?

well, sometimes looking for
something that is "robust"
is not better than the "kiss"
method.

so my suggestion is that instead
of buying more software that
becomes outdated or proves to
be unreliable at the time when
you desperately need them,

buy another disk where you
can store backups of your
system and copies of your
user/personal files.

then you can simply use the
windows backup feature to
backup or restore your system.

also you can utilize either the
sync toy by microsoft or simply
use the copy and paste method
to manage your user files archives.

having a secondary disk not only
with your backups can also prove
useful if you have a functional
and virgin o.s. on it that will serve
as an alternate method to access and
or repair your system, in the event
your primary o.s. fails.

if you also want to add
the functionality of cd's
to your fail safe system,

then use a program like
"drive image xml" and use
the split options to make
cd size images of your
hard disk or partitions.

you may also want to explore
and add the "drive image xml"
plug-in into a bart's pe boot
disk.

the above methods have
worked for me and they
can for you too with a
little planning and practice.

Do you have an external hard drive? My suggestion is to go to
www.cmsproducts.com and ask any question
you may have. I use their backup program and am very satisfied with it. It
is NOT free however.
