When trying to backup my office outlook, I receive an error message that
states:an unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this
error code, which might be useful if you get additional hdlp to rewolve this
problem:
Error 0x80070021: The process cannot access the file because another process
has locked a portion of the file.

Please help.

Stephen

How are you trying to back up your PST? Is Outlook running?

It means, either OL has failed to exit properly (check running processes in
Task Manager)
or that another App has a hook into the data file, eg DeskTop search, sync
app etc

I got this message and found that unplugging the sync cable for my
phone allowed the backup to run.
