For over two months, all my attempts to back up my hard drive have failed.

Here's a typical error message from such a failure:


The backup did not complete successfully.

An error occurred. The following information might
help you resolve the error:

There is a problem with the backup catalog. Restore
from a different backup or create new, full backup.
(0x810000E4)

Backup time: 6/7/2010 9:18 PM
Backup location: BD-ROM Drive (E


Could a few changes be made to this error message?

1. Make it possible to copy and paste the text using
the mouse, to make it faster to ask for help with
such errors.

2. Show more information about just what kind of
error with the backup catalog, or add a button to
display such information.

a. Is the error in the contents of the backups
catalog, or a problem with accessing it at all?
If the backups catalog exists but there is a problem
with accessing it, a number of retries for this
access should be automatic.

3. Is the backups catalog stored as a file? If so,
display what other program currently is accessing
that file, if any. Also, display the full file name
to give the user a better chance to tell the other
program not to access that file.

4. Is the previous backups list stored as part of
the last successful backup? If not, it should be.
Also, the help file for the backup program should
mention how to restore just the previous backups
list, without wiping out any other changes made
since the previous backup.

5. Both the version of the backup program under
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System
Tools -> Backup Status and Configuration and the
version under Start -> All Programs -> Maintenance
-> Backup and Restore Center should be made able
to format and then write to at least three different
DVD+RWs if the backup is large enough it needs that
many, and even if automatic backups are currently
turned on.

6. If the backup program is currently waiting for
another DVD to write to, it should continue creating
files to write to the DVD and store them as part of
the shadow copy, but not mark the files as actually
backed up until it is able to copy these compressed
files to a DVD it gets later.

7. After unsuccessful backups, the program should
be able to read what it was able to write to the
backup DVDs and decide how much of it can be treated
as already written for the next backup attempt.
