I have two XP Pro SP3 machines, one is a laptop and the other a desktop.

The hard disk on my laptop died last night but luckily I had made a backup
using Microsoft's native backup utility. I need some files for an essay so I
restored the laptop backup onto the desktop machine.

All seemed to go ok but now when i try to open the folder to which i
restored the laptop backup I get an error message - The folder is unavailable
- access denied.

I've tried re-booting but that hasn't helped - any suggestions as to how I
get the folder back?

you can only restore that type of backup onto the machine which created it

If you are logged in as Admin, try to take ownership of the folder. In
security settings, add yourself with full control. Apply to the folder and
all subfolders. That should take care of it.

Thanks for the posts.

Whilst in "normal" mode I couldn't do anything with the folder, but on
booting into safe mode I was able to gain control.

In NTBackup, there is some Restore option about restoring the
protection/security. You do *not* want to restore those settings
(because the SID (Security Identifier) of one system (the laptop) is
different from another (the desktop)).
