Hi, we have the problem with the Outlook backup tool working, probably
because of Norton Internet Security. (I checked and their are no suspicious
processes running)

Why can I not just backup the regular outlook.pst file to my backup (an
external HD)and not use the backup tool. I have a backup software that backs
up our computers every evening on a scheduler.

There should be no reason why you can't. All the Outlook backup tool does
is copy the PST. You can copy the PST any way you want, provided Outlook is
closed when you do.
