Backup Issue: Installation

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running IE8 with XP, SP3 , Windows
Firewall, Avira Antivirus, Spybot, (for updates only) ,
Spywareblaster, ATF and Hive Cleanup and all the programs work well
together are up to date.

I recently installed an additional hard drive on my computer for
backups. A Seagate Barracuda 7200, which I bought as a replacement if
I ever needed one.

I didn't have any problems installing it The ribbon cable pin
connector was grey and the power cable went in with no problem. I did
read up on setting the jumpers and it said that there should be no
jumpers for a slave (I noticed their weren't any jumpers on the
Master) and they didn't come with the little covers( I do have 2
though from another hard drive).

When I powered it up the screen was blank (I had to press the reset
button to power it off), so I opened it up again and unplugged the
power cable but it still was blank. So I unplugged the ribbon
connector but when the computer came up it showed that it detected a
new device, which I cancelled, and when it finally did come up the
browser looks liks I'm in Safe Mode.

I would appreciate any advice to get back to square one and help me
with the hd so that it works as a dedicated backup.

Thanks,
Robert

The Dell drive could be in Cable Select. You'd probably want the
second hard drive added, to be Cable Select as well, if that was
the case. Your options are either (Cable Select, Cable Select)
or (Master, Slave) with two drives. If WD drives are involved,
you might even need (Master with Slave, Slave), as WD has a few
differences from the others. WD offers Master (alone), Master with Slave,
and Slave as jumper options, when other makers offer Master, Slave.

When running a single drive, it goes on the end connector. The
second drive is added to the middle connector on the IDE cable.

The screen should not be black in any case. Even if the drives
are not jumpered properly, the BIOS should still start, and
display something to indicate it can't find a boot device or
can't detect drives or whatever. If the BIOS is actually functional,
and cannot start up the graphics system, it should beep a repeating
pattern of beeps, to indicate there is a problem. Once the BIOS
thinks the graphics are working, then any error codes should be
displayed on the screen.

A black screen could mean there isn't sufficient power. Or, it
could mean you bumped some other wiring inside the computer. Or
that there are multiple monitors, and the BIOS screen is displaying
on another monitor. Or, the monitor just died (if it stays black
and the OSD doesn't work).

Where is "it" and were you reading about your *specific* drive or drives in
general?

backup drives should be USB, ESATA, or external SCSI so they can be removed
from the system.
Always check both drives - as stated the first should be set to Master (or
Master with slave), and the second to slave. I haven't used a cable select
cable for many years (Compaq) so no longer use the cable select method. This
is one reason I try and stay away from western digital drives.

'it' = hard drive, sorry. I want to thank 'Hot_Text' I completely
forgot about the software. (Slaps head).

To Anthony, Jason - I appreaciate the thoughts, but I'm on a very
limited fixed budget. If I can get this to work it will give me more
than I had for next to nothing since I already had the drives and
Paragon has a free trial to bootstrap it. However its an excellent
idea that I will keep in mind.

I think my difficulty is exactly how to set which one is Master and
Slave? This is my reference:

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...00dd04090aRCRD

I couldn't find any PATA jumper settings so maybe the Master has to
have some covered? As I said, I have (2) but if I need more where
could I buy them?

This what I have. The Master is connected at the end of the ribbon
cable and there are no jumpers. The Slave is set in the middle with no
jumpers. It seems that all I was missing was the software. Am I
wrong?

Thoughts, Suggestions
Thanks,
Robert

I just realized that I cannot do this, I don't have the software. All
I have is a Seagate Disc Utility. Still, I don't remember having to
that when I upgraded my hd?

My problem now it to get my computer back to normal. It still has that
Safe Mode look and none of the pages will stay constant, they keep
tecovering the tab.

When I loin it gives me this:

Seeral line of plug and play configuration error. Strike the F1 key to
continue, F2 to run the setup utility. I set it to boot off the
C:drive but it still gives the same results, same page, same
messages.

I think I'm going to take Anthony and Jason's advice.

Thanks,
Robert

Sorry, I should have read it before posting:

I should read:

When I login it gives me this:

Several linev of 'plug and play configuration error'. Strike the F1
key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility'.
I set it to boot off the C:drive but it still gives the same results,
same page, same messages.

I don't understand...the page you linked gives the jumper positions you need
for PATA Seagate drives.. As I said before, there will also be a diagram
on the back of the drive near the jumper pins. Note that each brand of
drive may have different settings for a given state; that means you *may*
have to re-jumper your original drive...you need to check it too.

You should need no software to have the drive recognized and useable.

You have the data cable connected correctly.

You won't need more than one jumper per drive. All they do is connect two
pins on the drive. Should you lose them, you can buy them pretty much
anywhere that sells computers.

Is this copy and paste from the Seagate site you posted germaine?

"Limit drive capacity/Capacity Limitation Jumper (CLJ). Use this when either
you start up your computer and see the message, "Hard disc drive controller
failure", your computer does not recognize your newly installed hard drive,
or your system stops responding during the boot process after installing
this new drive. If this jumper is required, your system cannot support a
drive this large and can be updated with a PCI controller card."

If so, you may need more jumpers.

If not, do you have the same messages when your new drive is totally
disconnected (power AND data cables)? If so, what happens when you press
F1? F2?
