When i'm using the backup feature in Vista to backup my files the system
creates a new full backup-set everytime instead of just adding on to the
excisting set (which is what it's supposed to do according to the
help-function).
This means that disk d: Recovery that is the prechoosen backup destination
fills up after just one backup. What should I do? I need to backup my files
and would really prefer not to have to buy an external harddrive since this
so-called easy backup feature eas one of the reasons i chose to upgrade to
Vista.

It's not a prudent idea to place backups on the same drive.
What if your hard drive should fail? It would be best to
invest in an external drive for backups.

The Recovery partition D should be left exactly as it was when you first
bought the computer.

Backup programs look for a drive or partition which does NOT contain the
operating system. In the case of yours, it was the D drive.

If you want to backup your system, you will have to obtain backup storage,
perhaps in the form of an external USB drive or secondary internal drive..

Delete existing backup and create a new one, since there is no versioning or
acquire additional space.

Gunn - Note Mike's reply. To emphasize - unless you have copied the
Recovery partition to removeable media, "hands off" or you may lose the
capibility of restoration.

The Recovery partition is "small" by nature since it only holds the original
HD contents.
