I'm looking for software to backup my XP/3 HD to an external HD. My
apps, including MS Ntbackup, only backup to CDs or DVDs.

Any ideas?

Comodo has their Backup and Time<something> programs. The former is a
backup program. The later is an imaging program (and still has bugs
according to forum posts). Both are free.

You never bothered to mention if you are looking for free or paid solutions,
or if it doesn't matter which. Acronis TrueImage is an imaging program but
it lets you save full or incremental images (to save space on the backup
device). Some folks use Norton's Ghost for imaging/backups.

A free solution is Paragon's Backup & Recovery program.

Yeah, I've done the Google thing. I'm interested in people's
experience with apps which use external hard drives as the target.

I use Acronis on both external & internal without issues
I have both recovered individual files & restored an image without issues
