Depends on size and what type of files.
You cannot copy programs ...these need to be reinstalled.
Personal files can be transferred by copying to a DVD/CD/HD......by using a
crossover Cat5 cable ..........by setting up a LAN if you have a router.
Copying to a DVD/CD is the least complicated but the most time
consuming...copying to a spare HD or installing the Old Gateways HD in the
new one and then transfering the personal files is the quickest...just be
sure you hook it up as a slave drive and to change the pins on the back of
the drive to the slave setting. Then just drag and drop to where you
want.Heck if your going to junk that old gateway you could actually leave
the drive attached as a slave..format everything off it and use it as a 2nd
drive for more storage.
crossover cable is a quick way to transfer but takes longer to setup and to
find and buy a crossover cable.

Just install the old HDD as a slave in the new machine and copy all the
files you need, or, even, just leave it there!
