I am looking for a backup to CD program, preferably freeware, that will
work on my mother's old Windows 98 Se computer. She has filenames that
easily exceed 64 characters, so trying to avoid mass renaming or using
a tool like LONG FILENAME FINDER, I am hoping to find a freeware backup
program that can write names over 64 characters [the limit for JOLIET].
I belive her longest name is around 140 [rare] but there are many in
the 100 character range. [This info courtesy of the cool freeware LONG
FILENAME FINDER.]
She also doesn't want to use the Roxio/Adaptec Easy CD Creator, etc.
that came with her PC [though not sure if that does over 64 on a
Win98], but would consider, I think, other similar UDF programs. Not
very familiar with Easy CD Creator [her version is old, 4.something].
So, I guess that'd be in the range of supporting ISO9660:1999 [207
character limit, I believe] on a Win98. Is that possible?
Does anyone have any suggestions, or is this "impossible" as I've been
told on a Win98 SE computer?
Also, something in the way of warning, as with most backup/CD burning
proggies, that alterts you to having to truncate filenames.
If she does have to go back to Roxio Easy CD Creator 4.x for over 64
characters, does anyone know what the character limit is for this under
Win98? Again, not the ideal solution since she wants to share CD's with
friends who don't have either Roxio or want to or know how to install a
UDF reader [eg, Roxio's Nero's or even the shareware JET STORAGE UDF].
Or are there other UDF alternatives I should look at? Either freeware
or shareware.
One more thing: this could be either: a backup program, or even a CD
burner app.
Tried thus far:
BurnAtOnce [fiddled with the several filename options with pretty much
all valid possibilities without success]
CDBurnerXP
Back4Win
That's as far as I got before I thought that maybe this was impossible
on Win98.
Again, freeware or shareware ideas.
Thanks!
