I have tried using Backup and Restore Center using DVD +R DL and it writes
4.77 gigs of data before giving up (it does this consistently) with a device
I/O error.

Other software I use on the machine (Vista Home Premium) can write the full
DVD.

Why doesn't B&RC sense the DL (or does it even support it)?

Probably not answering your question directly, but...I gave up on using CD's
or DVD's as my backup destination. Too many discs, too much time, too many
errors. I bought an external USB hard drive for $60 to use for my backups;
a good investment. Sorry, have no experience with DVD double layers.

Does your drive support DL ?
