I have a folder containing some five thousand files sorted in numerous
subfolders, totaling about 800GB so far and counting. Just in case the
harddrive is irrestorably broken, I occasionally safegurd by copying
the entire folder on another drive. Such a task naturally takes long,
long time (two days or longer) even though only a small fraction of
the file population is newly created or modified, if I use ordinary
backup softwares.
It will be very helpful and productive, however, if a program is
available that first examine the backup drive to see if a file with
the same name already exists in a corresponding subfolder and, if so,
determine whether or not its content is identical so that copying
(overwriting) is unnecessary.
Can someone guide me to such a backup software?

WinZip can do it.

WinZip is a software for decompacting zip-, cab-files as I have
understood. Before I purchase WinZip for a try, would you please
elaborate how to use it in terms of my purpose? How advantageous is it
as compared to dos command Xcopy? I have not used Robocopy, but is
this applicable to my problem with or without additional merits?

Your understanding is incomplete. Go to winzip.com if you want to
research its capabilities. Only you can decide if its ability to
process only updated files and drill down through nested directories
satisfies your needs.
