Is there a free GUI backup utility that would

- allow me to define a set of files/folders to backup
- verifies the file (compare source and copy) after copying to ensure no
errors

xcopy would work, but I prefer a GUI interface.

Windows Backup is part of Windows XP. If you have Pro, it's in your Start menu, under Accessories > System Tools. If you have Home, you'll need to install it from the CD.

A search of the internet will yield dozens, if not hundreds, of free backup programs.

I checked windows XP's backup. It saves the file in a proprietary format
which I don't like. I prefer backing up in an easily accessible format like
plain files.

There are indeed many free backup programs, copy utility,
folder-sychronizing programs. I was hoping someone could point me to the
right one or narrow my choices so I won't have to examine or test each one.

My needs are
- be able to tree copy AND verify the copy
- has a GUI interface
- freeware, preferably open source
- optionally, be able to specify a list of files/extensions to ignore

Use CD write software, Nero for instance, to save your stuff to CD.. that
way you get to keep all of your 'plain' file extensions..

I just discovered this great little freeware called syncback. Its
verifies and does a number of other things. Have a look.
