I have just configured and loaded a new Core Duo machine. In 2005, on my
previous machine) I installed Norton Systemworks, avoiding the installation
of GoBack. Life was beautiful. But when I upgraded to NSW 2006 the trouble
started. I know what the problem was-- help from this NG pointed at NSW's
self-protection feature as the culprit. The recent excellent reply to a
similar problem by Bert Kinney (11/14) confirmed this.
However I did like certain features of NSW besides Anti-Virus. The 1 button
checkup was nice, as is their defrag utility. However the 2006 screwing up
my system restore files, causing the need for a complete system re-install
is giving me thought for pause. It seems to me I have 2 alternatives:
1) install 2005 (which did not trash my SR files) and get all the NAV
updates
2) Ask this forum its preference of another registry cleaner and anti-virus
and ditch Norton altogether.

If I were to choose option 1, how would I back up SR files, just in case!
(i.e. what are they called, etc.)

1. Do not use any Norton products.

2. Do not use any registry cleaners. Do a search at Google Groups
Advanced Search for "registry cleaners" and constrain the newsgroup to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general to read discussions about registry
cleaners.

3. Recommended antivirus programs are NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast if you
want a free one. The built-in Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.

4. Purchase an external hard drive and an imaging program such as
Acronis True Image which can image your system and do incremental backups.
