I have recently aquired an external hard drive to back up my c drive. I want
to be certain that my address book and templates etc. in outlook are backed
up. When exploring the back up drive, what files do I open to see address
book, templates etc. to make sure they are being backed up?

Everything is stored in a .pst file and cannot be accessed to view
particular items like you wish. You could back up the pst, create a new
profile and import to see if all is there.

Make a copy of your pst file (with Outlook closed). That will contain all
your data - email, calendar, tasks and contacts.
to backup email account settings and (AFAIK) templates etc, use the "Save My
Settings" wizard, which can be found in Start-All Programs-Microsoft
office-Microsoft office Tools.

data from one outlook (or profile) to another....

Hi mikyie,

PST "WILL NOT" have templates, signatures, in it.

the most simplest way to do it manually is .
Got to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates and backup all files to backup templates
and C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Signatures and backup all files to backup signature
and C;\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book and backup address book.
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and
and backup .nk2 files for autocomplete.
