Background problem with Display Properties

I can browse to and get other pictures to use as Background in the Display
Properties of XP. But I cannot remove the pictures from the Background
list. How do you delete names of pictures from that list? The pictures are
personal pictures and are not in the My Pictures folder. I can delete the
pictures, and they will not display, but the names are still on the
Background list.
