My kids were playing around with the computer and put a photo of the dog for
the wallpaper. The problem is that it is over the desktop and you can;t see
anything behind it. I have to go to the START on the taskbar to run any
programs as I can't see the desktop. I went to the desktop settings and it
is disabled, that is I can't change anything on it. This wallpaper pops up
when I start the computer and also pops up when I shut the computer down.
Running XP SP3. How do I get rid of this? Can anyone HELP.

Start>Control Panel>Display>Desktop tab. Click on Customize Desktop, and
then click on the Web tab. You will see that there are checkmarks next to
"My Current Home Page" and probably "Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these.
Then go back to the Desktop tab and set a plain blank Desktop (no
wallpaper). Apply/OK out. Reboot. If that doesn't take care of it, ask your
kids what they did and tell them they better put things right in a New York
Minute. Or else.

Malke,
I tried that. My Current Home Page is there in the web tab but is not
checked and neither is the Lock Desktop Items checked. The No items has a
red circle to the left of it and I cannot check on anything as it all
appears to be disabled. The kids said all they did was right click the
desktop, select properties and went to the desktop and selected a photo to
be put on the desktop. The problem is it is in foreground covering all and I
can't get it off.

You should not download anything from PCButts1. He isn't a real anything,
let alone an MVP. He is a plagiarist of other people's software, hosts pr0n
on his website, and slanders good people when they try to defend
themselves. His software will also prevent you from getting to legitimate
malware-fighting websites.

It seems unlikely to me that all your kids did was to set a desktop
background in the usual way. However, here are a few suggestions based on
what happens when an image applied by malware does the same behavior. Try
one thing at a time, testing after each change.

1. If you can't enable desktop backgrounds, MVP Kelly Theriot has a fix.
Look under Wallpaper-Desktop-Disable Changing here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_w.htm

If Display tabs are missing, run Kelly's registry edit on line 285,
right-hand side "Restore all display tabs".

2. Check to see if these Registry entries exist (Start>Run>regedit [enter]).
Navigate to the keys mentioned. Highlight the key on the left and look for
the entries on the right.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GroupPolicyobject\{21A7BE9D-5027-49C1-B6F7-757B707E1C94}User\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
If "GroupPolicyRefreshTime" and/or "GroupPolicyRefreshTimeOffset" are there,
then delete them.

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System. If "GroupPolicyRefreshTime"
and/or "GroupPolicyRefreshTimeOffset" are there, then delete them and then
run the reg fix from Kelly's page.

A default wallpaper called wp.bmp (or something else in your case) may be
set in HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System. Remove that and you
will be able to choose different wallpapers.

For inability to change wallpaper after malware, here is another key:
Hkey_Current_User/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer,

Bogus values will be set to 0. Delete or set to 1.

Let me know what happens. And again, don't run anything you've downloaded
from PCButts1.

TonySper, Everything Malke has said about me is a lie. My reset tool should
work for you and please try to ignore the bickering between Malke and me she
does not like or know me, why she is spreading lies is beyond me.

Let me reinforce what Malke has told you. You do not want to run
anything you download from The Real Truth [MS MVP].

The web page http://www.ms-mvp.org/ uses Godaddy's stealth
frame-redirection to redirect you to:
http://pcbutts1.com/downloads/tools/tools.htm

The Real Truth MS MVP is not listed on the MVP list:

http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/

The Real Truth MS MVP is listed in the MVPS HOSTS file supplied by
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/

127.0.0.1 pcbutts1-therealtruth.blogspot.com
127.0.0.1 pcbutts1.com

Anyone using this reputable HOSTS file will not be able to access the
above two web pages.

Check out “pcbutts” using your favorite search engine.

Malke,
Thanks for the info on him or her. It looks like a her. Nice looking Blonde.
Will go through all your suggestions and see what happens. Now I need to
find time to get over to his house and try things out.
Thanks
