When I attempt to back up using the back up utility in
windows XP, I get an error messsage that says:"The back
up file name could not be used. D:\Backup.bkf
Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have
sufficient access. What am I doing wrong?

Windows Backup will backup files to two devices on a standalone computer..
the first is the A drive (floppy).. the second is a tape drive.. you
probably have a floppy drive, but I would bet that you don't have a tape
drive.. use cd writing software and your CD writer to save important files..

Add to that a third device: the hard drive, which should not be overlooked.
An excellent way to backup is to write the backup to a separate partition.
If you can backup to a second physical hard disk, so much the better. Then
follow Mike's advice and burn the backup to CD or DVD.

If you need to backup, you'll save time and possible I/O errors by restoring
from the hard disk. And if your hard disk goes kablooey, not to worry: You
also have a copy on CD/DVD.

Hard drives can be used for sure, but where a system has only one drive, it
is not such a good idea.. the essence of backups is that they are stored
away from the danger zone.. placing them to a second partition is asking for
trouble in the event of HD failure, and an HD is more likely to fail if it
is being used as the boot drive.. I agree with your sentiment re. restoring
from an HD, and recommend to always have a slave HD fitted and formatted
FAT32..

Unfortunately, most people have only one drive in their computer and I feel
that it is better and safer to tell them to back up (save) to cd.. the other
problem with backup, as those with Win 98 have discovered is the total
incompatibility with any other version..
