You need to read the manual that came with the PC.
Every manufacturer uses his own method for a
factory restore.

Then check the manufacturer's home site, write to him or ring him.
Don't just throw in the towel!

The computer manufacturer has to provide some way to restore the system.
They have three options:
1. XP installation CD
2. Recovery CD
3. Hidden partition on the hard drive that has an image of the drive as
received from the factory.

To find out what came with this system check on the computer manufacturer's
web site or with their tech support. You might be able to get a replacement
CD from them.

If your friend did receive but lost the CD and there if there is no hidden
partition on the hard drive, is there a sticker on the computer case with
the product key for XP? If so you can use a generic OEM XP installation CD
of the same type, Home or Pro, and language, to reinstall the OS using that
product key. You can borrow a CD from someone and make a copy of it to use
with the product key. It has to be a generic OEM XP CD.

If you can't find someone who has a generic OEM XP installation CD of the
same type as you have installed, then look into buying just the CD on eBay.
The last option is to buy a copy of XP. I wouldn't buy the product key on
eBay. Buy at a retail software store.

One option is to call the maker of the cd and say you want to buy the
restore disk for the pc.
