Back up and restore PST files in Outlook 2003

I would like to backup my Outlook data files to a Memory Stick (in a USB
port) so I can use it to restore my data after a system crash, or to transfer
the data to another computer.

I've investigated various ways to do this and it gets more confusing the
more I investigate and test: backup, restore, archive, import, export, file
locations, etc.

Generally, I've found that if I do a restore from the Memory Stick, the data
files are not copied to the Outlook data folders and I must keep the Memory
Stick in place while using Office. This is not the way a true backup should
work. I've also found problems with changes in drive allocations when I
insert the Memory Stick into the USB ports. This seems to be a problem with
the automatic backup programs.

The best way I can find is to manually backup the data files to the memory
stick and manually copy them back to the Outlook data folders.

Does anyone have a good method for backing up, a description of what files
need to be backed up and where the data files are stored?

Of course you fail to mention what backup app you are using or how you go
about restoring, but the problems you see that require the usb stick to be
plugged in would generally mean that you are connecting to the pst located
on the usb, or that your backup app is 'looking for' the usb stick.
As repeated often enough, with OL closed, you simply copy the pst(s) from
whence to where
PS The MS OL backup addin, merely creates a copy of the pst(s)
