After using WD for more than two weeks I am back to Microsoft AntiSpyware,
which in my opinion, is more useful than WD. I will not say WD is a complete
trash, but taking it as a step forward it sures lacks many options and the
stability found in MSAS. From the icon to the scans, WD needs a lot of work,
and as a Beta user I found it more insecure than the previous version. The
reasons behind my decision? Obviously the many update errors, but the winner
was the time it took WD to scan my computer; even in quick scan mode. I even
tried many suggestions, from clearing the notification area to deactivating
the security softwares (in this case McAfee Internet Security), but nothing
worked.
I believe my notebook is not so old, having an Inspiron 8200 with P4
Mobile 1.8 Ghz and 768 MB with 30 GB. I think a 3 to 6 hours scan is too, but
too long. Requirements or not, MSAS works perfectly with my machine, contrary
to WD.
A few suggestions for a next release (hopefully very soon):
1) Improve the icon, at least the colors or use another element from the
Medieval Times. Also the notification of "3 days without scanning", option to
allow or turn off such reminder.
2) Include a cascade menu like MSAS and not just Open or Exit in the tray
icon.
3) Make the scans faster and more precise.
4) Include the Tracks Eraser and other security plugins previously
available in MSAS.
5) Upgrade the "updates engine" to be manual or automatic and with or
without Microsoft Update feature.
6) Create a better user interface with more information about what is
detected or the elements allowed or denied in the computer. Something similar
to MSAS.
* What about creating a GUI for an Administrator which could handle
complex features and a simpler GUI for the guest or beginner.
7) Repair the Allow Items feature, which doesn't remind any program.
8) Create an error log for WD issues (technical information).
9) Update the SpyNet known list of programs.
10) Improve performance and stability.

Problems found:
1) Update errors
2) Installation issues (typical Administrator privileges -solution: create
an guest account)
3) Scanning performance and issues (3 hours plus to finish a quick scan, 6
hours plus to finish a Full Scan. Custom Scan doesn't remember selected
folders. Even scanning an empty folder takes WD to scan all the computer).
4) "Allowed items" not allowed.
5) Security software detected as unknown.
6) Detected a trojan in MSAS quarantine folder (when doing a first scan
and after MSAS was removed).

Finally, my thanks to all the great members of these forum that tried
thier best to resolve these issues. Hopefully Microsoft will post a new beta
for WD. Once again, thanks to all and good luck!

I agree! Windows AntiSpyware was a MUCH better program than Windows Defender.
Why does it seem like Windows Defender should be BETA 1 and Windows
AntiSpyware BETA 2!

There were so many more features and options in AntiSpyware! Why Microsoft,
why?!?!

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm a bit miffed that I can't reinstall MSAS. Much
more elegant and configurable. I'm guessing here that MS wants to offer a
generic product for the generally noobed public. I certainly hope this
product either develops to the level of MSAS or that they offer advanced
configuration features.
If not, I won't see a reason to use it. However, I certainly appreciate MS
comittment to security and hope they are listening to your suggestions.
