That's it for me. I'm tired of all this updating. I think more is
going on than mere updates here. For instance, there used to be a
module running in the background that's named Avgserv9.exe until I
disabled it in System Configuration. I never got a satisfactory
explanation of what it does and the program works fine without it
running in the background.

Time to give Avast! a try.

BTW, Antoine reported an Ad-aware, not an AVG update.

Copyright Copyright (c) GRISOFT, s.r.o. 1998-2002
and I assume it is part of AVG's update version checker as it is
dated 17/07/02 07:41 and as Grisoft seems to work well, despite
the update delays recently which after all there must be a huge
number of users updating this fine program.

What would the option be? A freeware that rarely updated? Given new
virus mutations daily it seems reasonable (and prudent!) to be getting
these updates.

If the auto-update is being used it would hardly even be noticable, no?

Nah, I just think a more reasonable frequency would be okay. Most
people probably don't update as often as they come out anyway.
As for me switching to Avast!, I've been considering doing so for a
while anyway because of it's higher ratings. I tried to install it
this morning and during the install there was reference to a module
called "The Bat" or somesuch. Probably missing something, but I can't
find any information about it on their site so I aborted. However, it
was too late and I had to do an uninstall and system restore. No
biggie, but I want to find out what that module does first. Also, I
notice that like AVG, Avast! wants to run a process in the background
that has the letters "serv" in it. I don't like that business at all
and want to know what it's about too.
