This program is new to me. Apologies if it has already been mentioned.

I saw this freeware program reviewed in Issue 76 of PC UTILITIES
magazine. They awarded it 5 stars out of 5 stars, and declared it "PC
UTILITIES Freeware of the month". Below is what they wrote in the review.

"AVS DVD Player is a top-notch software DVD player with a great range of
features including:

- Supports for most video files

- Stunning visualizations

- Excellent audio options"

"Most new PCs come equipped with a DVD drive of some description, so
you'd think there would be a wide array of DVD playing software
available. The selection on offer to Windows users is in fact rather
limited - CyberLink PowerDVD and InterVideo WinDVD have the commercial
end of the market pretty much sewn up, and freeware alternatives are few
and far between. You could view your DVDs using Windows Media Player,
but then you could edit your digital photos in Paint.

"Rather than make do with second best or be forced to pay out for good
quality DVD playback, you can get the best of both world(sic) with AVS
DVD Player - a free software DVD player with a good range of options."

"No matter what type of movie file you wish to view, AVS DVD Player's
broad format support should have it covered. All breeds of DVD, VCD and
SVCD are catered for, as is the full gamut of MPEG 4 files, including
DivX and Xvid movies. The program can also be used to play digital audio
files, and the visualisations on offer easily outstrip those included
with the likes of Windows Media Player and iTunes."

When playing video files, you choose from a range of aspect ratios to
better suit the content you're playing and the nature of your PC
display. Various widescreen ratios are included as standard (16:9,
1.85:1, 2.35:1) but you can set up a custom ratio as requited too. The
tools audio functions are also not to be sniffed at. From the Speaker
Environment section of the Preferences menu, you can pick from a wide
selection of stereo and surround sound options, and you can even fake
surround sound signals for stereo-only medial."

"AVS DVD Player has enough features to stand up well against some of the
commercial giants, which makes it a real find for a freeware tool."

Please note that I haven't used this program, as I have no need for it.
My computer is in the living room beside the TV and the DVD player. I am
passing it along because this seems to be an exceptional freeware program.
