Howdy:

I upgraded from AVG 7.5 (which worked great) to AVG 8.0 which has reduced my
computer to a crawl all the time. AVG 8.0 is using 89% of my CPU.

I've tried disabling the link scanner but that hasn't helped. Maybe there is
some conflict since I upgraded to AVG 8.0 on another computer and it works
fine.

So, I'm thinking of switching to Avira. DOES THAT HAVE A SMALLER FOOTPRINT
THAN AVG 8.0?

Any other suggestions. Again, I had no problems using AVG 7.5

Mel

I did not load the email scanner, and of course turned of the link scanner.
The rest seems to work okay on my laptop. XP SP3 Windows Media Edition
2005.
But Avast worked fine, I just didn't like the 'feel' of it. Of course
that was before I felt AVG8.0. Never seen Avira.

I just turned off the link scanner; I'll see if that helps.

Am I not subjecting myself to problems if I turn off the email scanner?

I am sure if you save an attachment and then open it, the standard virus
check should kick in.
However, I've seen comment that even clicking an attachment runs it and
then the normal virus check kicks in.

If that is right, and this is my 2 cents, then you are safe.
I don't click attachments unless I know who its from.
I don't read emails if I don't know who they are from or don't expect
them, like apply for something on a new website. Still they better send
me a name that means something.

I only advocate email scnning *IFF* the AV software is MAPI and/or VIM compliant.

The "On Access" scanning capability will catch attachments.

As for Avira AntiVir, I can't speak to comparing footprints of Avast vs. AntiVir but I can
state that AntiVir has low system utilization.
