Under Windows Media Player Options, in the File Types tab, make sure
that the *.avi file type is checked. If enabled, then update Windows
Media Player by downloading additional or upgraded codecs.

If that does not work then get VLC, Video Lan. Google VLC. Its a
pretty good video player with a lot more codecs built into it.
You simply say you can't play avi's. You don't say if they won't play
or won't launch a program.

You need to install the proper codecs. Check here http://www.divx.com/ and
download the free version. When installing do not install the trialware
player. Once the codecs are installed you will be able to play avi files in
Media Player. Or use GOMPlayer which is free and works very well

I have downloaded the DIVX package and I notice that some avi files will
play in Media Player and some will not. Are there two kinds of avi files?
The ones that don't work in Media Player play fine in the DIVX player.

There have to be a lot of codecs. You would think that everyone would
use standard codecs, but then again, there has to be some reason for
everything. Even if just a poor preference. I suspect you are
getting a few AVI files that have unusual codecs. I've had a lot too.
And as much as WMP says its downloading the needed codec, it doesn't.
Try http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ if you have no luck with codecs. I
found it fixed a lot of my AVI issues.

Yes. They all have the avi extension.

I have read there are approx. 800 different codecs for avi.
So you have to use G-spot to identify them, then search for the appropriate
ones.

There really is no "standard" .avi filetype. There are hundreds, if not
thousands, codecs that may be used by videos in .avi containers. You need to
know which codec(s) are required for the video in your particular .avi
container(s).

Download Gspot - http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
and it will identify for you the codecs required for the media in your .avi
container.

Most of my AVI's play in IrfanView but a few will only play in
KoolPlaya.

http://www.koolplaya.de/

http://www.irfanview.net/

For some other formats I use MPlayer Classic. The home page is
temporarily down. MPC available here:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=205650

MPC will play .rm [real media] if you DL Real-Alt codecs. You get
MPC as part of the codec pkg.
