I am using Office/powerpoint 2003 . I have several presentations I have created in earlier versions of PP (98 & ME)When the AVI or mpeg should start it just sits there then it times out sending me an error message saying Powerpoint has experienced a problem and needs to shut down and asks if I want to send an error message. How can I solve this issue.

I know that I'm not alone with this problem, I have searched many links but I still have this problem. Is there a reason my postings are skipped over. I do not believe I am being unreasonable or disruptive. Please help or point me in some direction.

I do not feel comfortable in the XP registry but is that were the problem lies or is it the codec thing?

It's probably because no one has an answer for you. Tell us more about what
you've tried and what you've found. Did you compare your Registry settings
to those at http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorial...multimedia.htm
? Are there differences? If so, what are they?

What is the source of your video files? Are they from a camera? If so,
what is the make and model? Do you know what codec was used to create the
files?

The AVI.s are from files created in 3d studio max then rendered in producer, files from a tv news report and files created by a hand held video at a labratory test facility.

I have reviewed the registry I have 1 line that is different (I have ivf reg_sz mpegvideo you recommend ivf reg_sz mpegvideo2) and you recommend a later line (wmp reg_sz mpegvideo2) I do not currently have that line. All this occurs in the mci extension registry

Should I modify these lines and if so how?

Have you tested the files in the MCI player? Go to Start > Run and type
mplay32.exe and then open each of them and play. If you are not using
Windows 2000 or XP then type mplayer.exe.

Yes and all video files run fine

I think its because of the conflicts in the registry, I am just not sure how to change/add the missing lines. I seem to remember a similar problem when I started using ME on my last laptop. Can you tell me or point me in a direction on how to change the registry.

Once again thank you for all of your efforts, I do not know where we would all be if not for the services you all provide.

I am reluctant to try telling you how to change your Registry if it isn't
something you are familiar with. It would be best if you found an associate
or support person who could walk you through it. Ideally they could be
there in person. It really isn't difficult, but human error can lead to
worse problems on the system.

I was able to accomplish it in ME 2 years ago by simply cutting pasting and resaving. Is it different in XP? I really need to get this done and I certainly will/would not hold anything against you or the group

Have you then tried your method? Go to Start > Run and type regedit and
click OK. That will open the Registry in edit mode. I recommend that you
first export your Registry to a safe place on your hard drive. I also
recommend that you take a checkpoint in Windows XP before changing the
Registry. Go to Start > Help and Support and click on "Undo changes to your
computer with System Restore". From the next Window select "Create a
restore point" and follow the dialog.

You can't cut and paste, so you're going to have to use Modify from the Edit
menu and change the settings to match what's on the web page.
